On Zombies and Devils

Well, as Mark Burd from Battle Axis put it, "Congrats, this is officially the weirdest fucking show South Florida has ever seen."

He was right. Saturday night's show at Alligator Alley, or Casa Del Kilmo as it's better known, was incredibly quirky. Although it started off with some difficulties, including some unannounced bands and DJs showing up as well as a sudden door charge, it ended up on a high note.

The first band up, Lefty Lucie, are SoFlo legends of a sort. They've got their whole power-pop funk rock thing down tight and it shows. The older crowd loved them, but most of the people there to see the later bands milled around outside and talked with their friends - I've seen Lefty Lucie a few times so I was out in the parking lot as well surrounded by Zombies and the undead.

The second band, Ride Zombie Ride, were completely doused in blood and guts - Jay, the lead singer, looked like the guy from Captured By Robots - including entrails.

They jumped on stage, Jay stood in the crowd and let the fans sing some of the hooks, especially to their self-titled song "Ride Zombie Ride." Robby Brantley from IMtheDEVIL threw down some serious death grunts, while dressed as a doctor. They played out a set filled with breakdown heavy psychobilly metal, it was intense.

The energy was building and I was asked by at least three separate people when Zombies! Organize!! were going to play, and the answer was next.

After their typical long setup of their five or six amps and half a dozen instruments including an electric harpsichord and a speak and spell kiddie keyboard that could be set to Cow or Chicken. But, this highly political band ascends their quirky combination of $10 toy keyboards and priceless Wurlitzer with girly crunk vocals and Wu-Tang covers. By now, a year after their first show, enough people know who they are to fill every venue they play in. Alligator Alley - full, Poorhouse - packed and they even filled Respectable Street before the opening act showed up.

After their set it was time for IMtheDEVIL to take the stage. They're a powerful four-piece band that pushes out some insane circuit bent grind core that will not only melt your face off, but finish you off down to the bone. They served up every ounce of their souls and left the crowd screaming and covered in blood.

Sometimes, it seems, you have to be undead to really live.
